Bought a jd870 early 98. Became aware of 4000's late 98. Really disappointed that I didn't know about the 4000's at the time in order to compare. When did the dealers know about the 4300+ models. Also, heard that Deere was offering a rebate to the 70's buyers in order to unload them. Should I be confronting my dealer about being misleading or not offerring a discount (rebate)??? Also, should I be happy with the 870 instead of a 4300/4400 and not worry about the growing pains and bugs of a new series??

After reading a few different postings, talking about x number of weeks till delivery of the various 4000 series units, you might feel better knowing that an 870 is sitting in your garage. ....

Yes John, Be happy you made a wise purchase on that 870. My nieghbor just bought a new 4300 sync. rev. That 870 is WAY MORE heavily constructed by comparison. The 4300 looks cheesy compared to the 870 with plastic everywhere. His new 4300 has been recalled to be split---Clutch problems. I have 600 hrs. on my 870 with zero problems. Whats amazing that every seal still looks factory new with absolutly no leakage anywhere. The tractor is as tight as new. I know you will be happy in the long run, plus all the money you saved on what I feel is a better tractor than the 4300. ....

I wanted to buy the 870 but could not do so because I could not get R4s with it. I thought it was a better buy than the 4200 I bought. I am happy with the 4200 though. You didn't lose anything. ....

I forget. The one they had in stock had turf tires. Perhaps it was because it would have cost too much to buy all new tires and wheels which I understand would have been required. As a matter of fact, they still may have that 870 with the turf tires. ....

I agree with comments that you didn't loose anything in your purchase. I got a 4100 about June 1 of 98 and my dealer knew then JD planned to expand the 4000 series and discontinue the 6xx to 9xx series tractors. They learned specifically about the new machines (specs etc) with an Augusta factory visit around June 1. I am not sure when JD announced their intention to replace the 6xx to 9xx machines..it was probably early 98 as that kind of transition does not happen overnight. I sometimes wish I got the 755 instead of the 4100 although the 4100 is working fine for me now. ....
